There has been an alarming increase in elderly abuse in over 400,000 hospitals, nursing homes, health and elder care facilities. Last year at a hearing on elder abuse held by Sen. Craig, Sara Aravanis, Director of the National Center on Elder Abuse, told the committee that nationwide reports of elder abuse increased from 117,000 cases in 1986 to 470,000 in 2000 – a 301% increase. Joan Otto of the National Association of Adult Protective Services Administrators said a nationwide survey by the group in 1990 found 470,000 reports of elder abuse in a one year period.
